Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

ABERDEEN, MD --- Three Vermont pitchers combined for the Lake Monsters second straight shutout and Ryan Huck went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the sixth inning to plate the only run of the game in a 1-0 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Ripken Stadium.

For the second straight night a Vermont starting pitcher allowed just three hits over six scoreless innings. After Kyle Finnegan tossed six shutout innings in the Lake Monsters 7-0 win over Auburn on Monday, Brent Powers did the same on Tuesday against the Ironbirds with two walks and four strikeouts. The third of those four strikeouts, a strikeout of Austin Wynns to end the fifth, made Powers the Lake Monsters career leader in strikeouts with 131 (passing 130 for Pierre-Luc Marceau in 2000-01).

Derek Hansen allowed one hit with two strikeouts in two scoreless innings, while Sam Bragg a leadoff single in the ninth and a strikeout for his third save of the season. With the back-to-back five-hit shutouts and three scoreless innings at the end of Sunday's game, Lake Monsters pitchers currently have a 21-inning scoreless streak and have lowered their team ERA to 2.94 overall.

Chris Wolfe led off the sixth with a single and advanced to third on a one-out tyler Marincov single to right. Huck, who had doubled in his first at bat and singled in his second, picked up his third hit with a groundball single to rightfield to score Wolfe with the only run of the game. The victory was Vermont's second 1-0 win of the season (the other June 27th at Connecticut).

Aberdeen reliever Austin Urban allowed one run on six hits over four innings to take the loss for Aberdeen (17-16), while Jonathan Schoop was 2-for-4. Wilfredo Solano was 2-for-4 with a double for the Lake Monsters, who outhit the Ironbids 8-5 on the night.

Vermont has now won five of its last six games to improve to 17-18 overall and will look to get to the .500 mark for the first time this season when they face the Ironbirds in the second of the three-game series at Aberdeen on Wednesday.
