Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The first-place Durham Bulls pounded out 16 hits and 14 runs to win a slugfest over the Pawtucket Red Sox at the DBAP Sunday. The 14-13 win avoided a sweep and was the highest scoring Bulls game in at least 10 years, topping a July 25, 2005 game against Rochester that combined for 26 runs.
The Bulls jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and held on for to win, snapping a three-game losing streak and salvaging the final game of the four-game showdown between IL division leaders. The Bulls still have not been swept in a series this season.
Leslie Anderson got things started for the Bulls with a bases-loaded double in the first, which gave him the team lead in RBI, with 59, moving past Wil Myers. Vince Belnome also passed Myers with his 58th RBI later in the game. Belnome had two doubles, giving him 29 on the year which ties for the IL lead. Six Bulls had more than one hit in the game, and six drove in runs.
The Bulls pitching staff couldn't keep the Pawtucket offense in check, however. Matt Buschmann gave up 7 earned runs, matching a season high for a Bulls starter set two nights ago when Pawtucket scored 7 off Mike Montgomery. Buschmann left after four innings, giving the starting rotation a total of 15.2 innings pitched in the four games with the Paw Sox.
Four Bulls relievers gave up a total of four more runs as Pawtucket put up the highest scoring output against the Bulls this season. Pawtucket had 17 hits, topping last night's 16 for the most the Bulls have allowed in a game this year.
Cory Wade (W, 4-1, 1.89) got the win in relief. PawSox starter Allen Webster (L, 5-3, 4.40) gave up 7 runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.
Kirby Yates entered the game in the eighth inning and struck out the tying run. Yates then finished the game for his eleventh save of the year.
The Bulls now travel to Gwinnett for two games. All-Star J.D. Martin (11-4, 3.02) starts for Durham against RHP Joe Bisenius (3-2, 6.17) for the Braves at 6:05pm on Monday.
