Purdy & El Salvador Eliminated from Gold Cup

July 21, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

Chivas USA defender Steve Purdy and El Salvador's National Team were eliminated from Gold Cup competition after falling 5-1 against the United States National Team in the Quarterfinals. Purdy, born in the United States to a Salvadoran mother, did not see action in La Selecta's last game in the CONCACAF's tournament.

Early in the game, the Stars & Stripes went up in the scoreboard after a goal by Clarence Goodson in the 15th minute in a play from a corner kick. Seven minutes later, Goodson would notch the second of the match, giving the United States the lead. Midfielder Joe Corona, whose father is Mexican and mother is Salvadoran but was born in San Diego, scored the 3-0 for the U.S. La Selecta didn't go to halftime without scoring their goal, and in the 39th minute, after a foul inside the box, Rodolfo Zelaya scored via penalty kick.

Returning to the second half, the Salvadorans looked to equalize putting in former Chivas USA midfielder Gerson Mayen. Unfortunately for La Selecta, it was not enough as Landon Donovan would score to amplify the scoreboard in favor of the United States. The last goal of the match would come in the 84th minute after a header by Mix Diskerud for the 5-1 final.

Purdy will return to Los Angeles to re-join Chivas USA this Tuesday, July 23, to prepare for their next match in Major League Soccer's Regular Season, this time facing the Seattle Sounders FC at XBOX Pitch at Century Link Field.

Recap: U23's end season unbeaten

Chivas USA's U23 Team closed the SoCal Premier League regular season with an outstanding 5-1 victory over Chula Vista Premier FC. The Red-and-White ended the season with a 7-0-1 (W-L-T) record, 22 points, and the most goals scored in the League (30).

The young Goats started off the game going down a goal in the 9th minute of the match as Chula Vista headed in the first of the game. It wouldn't take long until Chivas USA would get back on track. Taking advantage of a free kick from outside the box, Bryan de la Fuente notched the equalizing goal, scoring his second of the season.

After ending the first half with a draw, the Red-and-White came back to look for their seventh consecutive win. In the 77th minute, Javier Castro beats a Chula Vista defender on the left wing, sends a cross that finds Christopher Santana, who simply heads the ball in for the 2-1 Chivas lead. Less than 10 seconds later, Santana intercepts a ball, defeats the San Diego defender and scores his second of the match.

Midfielder Anthony Dheming would go on to score his fourth goal of the season, and the fourth for Chivas USA in the game off a cross by Angel Gonzalez, just seconds after the previous goal. Just before the end of the match, Dheming passes a ball to Santana who pushes the ball past the Chula Vista goalkeeper for the final 5-1 victory in the 88th minute.

Come out and support the Red-White U23's as they prepare for the SoCal Premier League's Semi-final Round to be held the weekend of August 3rd in San Luis Obispo. On Tuesday, Chivas USA will host National Premier Soccer League side FC Hasental in a friendly scrimmage at 7 p.m. (PT) at John Anson Ford Park in the City of Bell Gardens. Following that match, the Red-and-White will once again host another scrimmage on Saturday, July 27, this time against Real SoCal U23's at 5 p.m. (PT), also in Bell Gardens.

Catching up with Union Ultras

Every fan who has ever attended a Chivas USA game at the StubHub Center knows who Supporter Group Union Ultras is. In a challenging season, the Union Ultras cheer on the team throughout the entire 90 minutes from Section 101, without caring if Chivas USA are winning or losing.

But just like the group's members say, "Aguante la Ultra."

"Obviously, we started off the season very well, the team surprised more than one person. Unfortunately, as the games continued, with the people and the players that left, and those that got injured, the team's negative streak began. Now with Guero Real, it looks like he's put the team in order. There's a future [in the team]," Union Ultras representative Julio Ramos told cdchivasusa.com

Their love and dedication the Union Ultras have for Chivas USA surpass the StubHub Center. Every year, the Ultras travel to different stadiums to support the Goats. In the 2013 season, the Ultras travelled to Colorado to support the Red-and-White in their match-up against the Rapids. Up next, the Ultras will be travelling to Northern California for the match against the San Jose Earthquakes and invite fans to join the fun.

"They're unforgettable trips. I think that the majority of trips that we've had, the team has won, or at least they haven't lost. Independently of the final score, the trip is an unforgettable experience. The people interact, they get to know each other, it's the family that we are and most of all, and we see the respect that the people have for the Union Ultras as a supporter group in each stadium. It's something that you have to live to understand.

"Travelling with the Union Ultras is something that leaves you marked for so many reasons; for the brotherhood, the chats we have, and the things we do to support the team," Ramos finalized.
