Ninth-Inning Rally Saves Quakes

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Modesto, CA - The Quakes won their second straight road game and for the ninth time in their last 11 overall, rallying for two in the ninth on Saturday night, then holding on for a 7-6 victory over the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field.

The victory for the Quakes is just their second this year when trailing after eight innings and clinches a .500 road trip, as they're now 3-1 through the first four games of the six-gamer.

O'Koyea Dickson's two-out RBI single in the ninth evened the game and Casio Grider's bases-loaded walk eventually gave the Quakes the lead for good.

Leading 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Rancho reliever Matt Shelton allowed back-to-back base-runners to open the inning. Shelton caught a break for the first out, as Brian Humphries attempted a two-strike sacrifice bunt, fouling the ball off for a strikeout instead. Ryan Casteel, who ripped a first-inning grand slam, followed with a fly ball that took center-fielder Casio Grider all the way to the warning track for the second out. That fly ball allowed both runners to tag and move up a base. But with two in scoring position, Shelton coaxed Taylor Featherston into a game-ending roller to first base, securing his second save of the year.

The Quakes battled back from an early deficit, as they trailed 4-1 after one and 6-3 after six innings.

The Nuts' bullpen was incredibly generous on Saturday evening, as three different relievers issued a bases-loaded walk over each of the final three innings.

Scott Schebler had another big night offensively, with a solo homer and three RBIs. Schebler, who's now tied for the league-lead with 21 round-trippers, finished 2-for-4 and scored the tying run in the ninth, after he opened the inning with a double against Nuts' closer Scott Oberg (1-5).

Dan Coulombe (2-2) struck out a pair of batters in the eighth inning to earn the win.

The Quakes (14-16, 45-55) look for a third straight road win on Sunday evening, sending Lindsey Caughel (3-5) to the mound, opposite Ben Alsup (6-8) at 6:05pm.

The Quakes return to LoanMart Field on Tuesday, July 23rd, opening a six-game home stand. Tuesday is Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday, as fans can bring ten CRV-eligible bottles and/or cans to the ticket office for a free Club Seat Ticket. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you very soon at LoanMart Field. Go Quakes!
