Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, topped the Rochester Red Wings, 7-1, on Saturday . Zach Walters was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and scored three times for the Chiefs.

Syracuse (43-56) got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Corey Brown tripled off the right-field wall against Rochester (52-50) starter Liam Hendriks to start the frame. Chris Marrero then hit an infield single to the shortstop that scored Brown for the first run of the game. A few batters later, the bases were loaded for Will Rhymes with one out. He hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Walters from third base to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.

That total grew in the bottom of the fourth inning. Walters tacked a single to right field to lead off the frame. Kelly Shoppach then grounded out to third base and Walters moved to second on the play. Following a fly out by Josh Johnson, Rhymes hit a ground-ball single to right field that scored Walters for a 3-0 Syracuse lead.

Chiefs starter Yunesky Maya dominated early on. He retired the first 13 batters he faced. However, with one out in the top of the fifth inning, Oswaldo Arcia smashed a home run over the right-field wall to break up the perfect game bid and give Rochester its first run of the game.

Syracuse came right back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brown doubled to left field with one out. Following a strikeout, Walters homered to right-center field to make the score 5-1.

The Chiefs tacked on a couple more runs in the sixth inning. With one out, Rhymes doubled to right field. Chris Rahl followed with a single to move Rhymes to third base and drive Hendriks from the game. Shairon Martis came on in relief and, following a strikeout, gave up a double to Tyler Moore that scored both runners for a 7-1 Syracuse lead.

Maya had one of his best performances of the year on the mound. He went six-and-two-thirds innings and gave up just one run on two hits. Mark Lowe and Tyler Robertson combined for a scoreless final two-and-one-third innings to clinch the game for Syracuse.

The Chiefs and Red Wings are back in action on Sunday at 5:00 . Syracuse sends right-hander Ryan Tatusko to the hill against left-hander Andrew Albers for Rochester.
