July 19, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
Round Rock, TX - The Chicago Cubs recalled 3B/OF Junior Lake today and will make his Major League debut tonight in Colorado. 3B Josh Vitters returns to the Iowa Cubs today from a rehab assignment with the Cubs' rookie team in Arizona. Vitters has been on Iowa's disabled list since May 26.
Lake joined Iowa on June 6 from extended spring training after starting the season on the D.L. with an oblique strain. In 40 games in his first career stint at the triple-A level, Lake batted .295 (46-for-156) with 10 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 18 RBI, 30 runs, scored, and 14 stolen bases. He played 36 games at third base and six games in right field. Lake joins Chicago to take the spot of former I-Cub Brian Bogusevic, who was placed on the D.L. with a left hamstring strain.
Vitters has battled injuries all season and is batting .270 (17-for-63) with two doubles, three home runs, and eight RBI in just 19 games with Iowa this year. Vitters was limited by a quad strain in spring training and was limited to one pinch-hit appearance with Iowa in April before going on the D.L. from April 9-30 with a lower back strain. He went back on the D.L on May 26 with a strain in his right rib cage. He played in five games in Mesa from July 10-18 and was 1-for-13 with a double, four walks, and five strikeouts in five games.
Last year, Vitters hit .304 (126-for-415) with 32 doubles, 17 homers, and 68 RBI in 110 games with Iowa and was selected to the PCL All-Star team. He was called up to Chicago on August 5 and hit .121 (12-for-99) with two homers and five RBI in 36 games to finish the season. The Cubs drafted Vitters in the first round (third overall) of the 2007 draft out of Cypress (CA) High School.
The Cubs play game two a four-game series in Round Rock tonight at 7:05. LH Brooks Raley (6-6, 4.85) will start for the Cubs against RH Scott Richmond (2-3, 6.10) for the Express. All of the action will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live on iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
