Petersen Sets Career Hits Record in Losing Effort

July 19, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Bryan Petersen had three hits to become the New Orleans Zephyrs' career hits leader, but the Nashville Sounds claimed a 3-1 victory in the series opener on Thursday night.

Petersen waited out a rain delay of nearly two hours to lace a double to right field with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, pulling into a tie with Jason Alfaro for first place in Zephyrs history with 346 hits.

Leading off the fourth, Petersen's blooper into left field landed safely, making him the new franchise hits leader, and he added a single up the middle in the sixth inning to record his eighth game this season with at least three hits.

However, the rest of the Zephyrs were held to a combined three hits, as Nashville starter R.J. Seidel cruised through the first five innings. He and Zephyrs starter Brian Flynn were locked in a scoreless duel until the Sounds capitalized on a leadoff walk in the fifth to score a pair of runs.

Flynn issued the free pass to Cole Garner, who advanced to third on back-to-back two-out singles by Scooter Gennett and Josh Prince, and a double by Robinzon Diaz drove home two runs to put Nashville on top.

Another leadoff walk in the sixth, this time to Khris Davis, led to another Nashville run. Garner delivered a one-out single to move the runner to third, and Stephen Parker laid down a bunt on a safety squeeze to plate the run.

Seidel (2-4) allowed only a solo home run to Kevin Mattison in the sixth inning, and struck out seven batters in 5 2/3 innings, equaling his second-longest start of the year. Rob Wooten worked the ninth inning to pick up his 19th save.

Flynn (3-10) notched his third consecutive quality start, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings, but became the fourth Pacific Coast League pitcher to suffer a 10th loss this season.

The Zephyrs and Sounds continue the series on Friday at 7 p.m.
