State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Bruce Caldwell became the fourth State College Spikes player to produce four hits in a single game as the Spikes stopped a five-game skid with an 8-2 win over the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Caldwell scored a run and knocked in a run with his four singles in five at-bats on Wednesday. The State College (15-13) second baseman joins Cesar Valera, Ronald Castillo and Jimmy Bosco as Spikes with four-hit games on the 2013 season.

State College was also bolstered by a strong pitching effort from Nick Petree (1-1) and Jimmy Reed (2), who went the entire game between them. Petree started and went five innings for his first professional win, allowing just one run on five hits, three walks and a hit batsman. The Missouri State product also struck out five.

Reed followed with four one-run innings for the save, and tied the Spikes' season high mark for strikeouts in a game with six. The left-hander gave up a run on four hits to finish the game.

The contest also marked a return to form for the State College offense, as the Spikes put together 14 hits as a team to notch their 14th game of the year with double-digit hits. Bosco, Castillo and Carson Kelly all had multiple hits as State College smashed a season high five doubles as a team for the fifth time this year.

Lowell (16-12) starter Mario Alcantara (2-2) took the loss after giving up four runs, two of them earned, on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman over 3 2/3 innings. Alcantara also struck out two in his shortest outing of the 2013 season.

Spinners leadoff hitter Carlos Asuaje provided the offensive punch for Lowell with three hits, including a solo home run off Petree in the third inning that started the scoring.

The win stopped the five-game State College losing streak, all of which were on the road, and increased the Spikes' home winning streak to five games.

Thursday, the Spikes continue their series against Lowell with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will start right-hander Andrew Pierce (0-1) on the mound, while the Spinners are slated to start left-hander Corey Littrell (0-0). Littrell is scheduled to make a short outing and be followed by right-hander Simon Mercedes (1-1).

Thursday offers a great night to bring the kids out for the Spikes' 7:05 p.m. game against Lowell, as the first 1,000 kids age 12 and under receive a Spikes Youth Jersey, presented by Boyles Insurance, as part of the Mini-Majors Head-to-Toe Giveaway Series. In addition, every kid 12 and under gets a free hot dog, chips and small soda along with a one-time free play pass to Ike's Kids Zone on Kids Eat N' Play Free Thursday, presented by DQ Grill & Chill .
