Wingnuts' Winning Streak Reaches Eight
July 12, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (36-18) beat the Kansas City T-Bones (19-35) 8-3 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Friday night.
The Wingnuts have won eight games in a row, tying the third-longest winning streak in franchise history.
Wichita overcame a 1-0 deficit in the top of the fourth and never trailed the rest of the night. C.J Ziegler drew a leadoff walk and went to third when Brent Clevlen doubled down the left field line. Abel Nieves tied the game on a groundball to second that scored Ziegler and advanced Clevlen to third. After Cole Armstrong was retired, Colt Loehrs slugged a two-out, RBI double off the left field wall to give Wichita a 2-1 lead.
The Wingnuts broke the game open with a five-run top of the fifth in which nine men came to the plate. Ryan Khoury and Jake Kahaulelio opened the inning with back-to-back walks. A wild pitch put Khoury on third and Kahaulelio on second. Two batters later, Ziegler was intentionally walked. With the bases loaded and one out, Ethan Cole relieved Kansas City starter Aaron Meade.
Brent Clevlen lined a single to left-center against Cole that scored Khoury and Kahaulelio to make it 4-1. Nieves followed with a double down the right field line that scored Ziegler and moved Clevlen to third. Armstrong finished the rally with a line drive single to left that scored both Clevlen and Nieves.
Kansas City rallied for an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp escaped further trouble when Matt Padgett grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Kahaulelio tripled to left field with one out in the top of the ninth and scored Wichita's final run on a Ziegler sacrifice fly to deep left-center.
The T-Bones cut the lead to 8-3 on a Felix Molina RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Kansas City worked the bases loaded with two outs to place the tying run on deck, but Josh Dew retired Devin Goodwin on a groundout to second to end the game and earn his 11th save of the year.
Kyle Nichols drove in the game's first run with a two-out, RBI double to left in the bottom of the first.
Klipp earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits over eight innings. Klipp walked one and struck out one.
Meade took the loss, allowing five earned runs on two hits in four and one-third innings. Meade walked six and struck out three.
All nine of Wichita's starters reached base at least once. Kahaulelio, Ziegler, and Clevlen all scored two runs.
