Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves, in conjunction with the Atlanta Braves, announced on Friday the addition of catcher Evan Gattis to the Gwinnett roster on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. Gattis, on Atlanta's disabled list since June 18 with a strained right oblique, will begin the assignment Friday night with the G-Braves as the club opens a three-game road series at Durham.
Gattis, 26, hit .252 (41-for-163) with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 37 RBIs and a .577 slugging percentage in 53 games with the Braves prior to suffering the injury in a game against the New York Mets on June 17. His incredible rookie season has included National League Rookie of the Month awards in both April and May, as he combined to hit .281 (39-for-139) with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs in his first 43 games. Gattis became the first player to win back-to-back NL Rookie of the Month awards since Braves' teammate and former G-Brave Jason Heyward won in April and May of 2010.
The slugging Gattis has spent time at catcher, left field and first base for the Braves. As a pinch hitter this season, he's gone an amazing 6-for-8 with a double, four home runs and 11 RBIs.
His assignment to Gwinnett will mark his first stint with Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate. Gattis spent time with Advanced-A Lynchburg and Double-A Mississippi last season, in addition to a four-game injury rehab stint with the Gulf Coast League Braves. After hitting .368 (21-for-57) with six homers and 16 RBIs in 24 games with the Braves this spring, he was named to Atlanta's Opening Day Roster on March 31.
Gattis will be the eighth Atlanta Braves' player to spend a rehab stint with Gwinnett this season, joining infielder Paul Janish (left shoulder surgery, April 15-24, May 5-10), first baseman Freddie Freeman (strained right oblique, April 19-21), catcher Brian McCann (right shoulder surgery, May 2-5), outfielder Jason Heyward (appendectomy, May 9-15), right-hander Jordan Walden (right elbow inflammation, May 27), right-hander Luis Ayala (anxiety disorder, May 8-14, June 20-July 4) and right-hander Brandon Beachy (right elbow surgery, May 19-28, June 8-14, July 9-current).
