Rookie Scoles Helps Wingnuts Win Seventh Straight

July 12, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (35-18) won their seventh game in a row, beating the Kansas City T-Bones (19-34) 1-0 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Thursday night.

Five Wingnuts' pitchers, including rookie starter Ryan Scoles, combined on a two-hit shutout.

The game's only run came in the bottom of the first inning. Jake Kahaulelio singled up the middle with one out and took second base on a wild pitch. John Rodriguez followed with a double that landed just fair inside the left field line to score Kahaulelio.

Scoles was signed before the game after scheduled starter Ryan Hinson was purchased by the Atlanta Braves' organization. In his professional debut, Scoles allowed just one hit, walked four, and struck out one over five-plus shutout innings to earn the win.

Scoles escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the first when Jairo Perez lined out to deep left field. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed just two baserunners from the second inning through the fifth.

Scoles issued back-to-back walks to Devin Goodwin and Matt Padgett to start the top of the sixth and was relieved by Daniel Bennett. Bennett struck out Kyle Nichols and Petey Paramore before inducing a comebacker from Perez that ended the inning.

Bennett and Nick Walters combined on a scoreless top of the seventh, while Lincoln Holdzkom worked a perfect top of the eighth on eight pitches.

Josh Dew earned his 10th save of the year with a scoreless top of the ninth and stranded the tying run on second base.

The two hits were the fewest allowed by the Wingnuts in a nine-inning game since July 13th, 2011 when three pitchers combined on a no-hitter versus Shreveport-Bossier.

Rodriguez finished the night with four hits and is two RBI shy of Josh Horn's franchise record (125). Wichita's bullpen combined for four shutout innings for a third time in four games.

Scoles is the 30th player to make his professional debut in a Wingnuts' uniform. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Scoles played two seasons at Hutchinson Community College and most recently played for the Walter Johnson League's Kansas Cannons.

The four-game series shifts to Kansas City's CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Justin Klipp starts for the Wingnuts. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 92.7 KWME and worldwide at www.pressboxproductionsradio.com
