Four-Run First Lifts Chasers in Series Opener

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (43-51) put up all the offense they would need in a four-run opening frame to defeat the Round Rock Express (52-43) in the series opener 4-2. The Storm Chasers have won 13 of 17 games against Round Rock at Werner Park, their best winning percentage against any PCL opponent, and have nine straight wins at the stadium against the Express.

Omaha had four of their six hits in the game in that first inning, scoring the first runs of the game on a sacrifice fly by Ben Broussard that ended up scoring a pair due to a throwing error by 2013 PCL All-Star Joey Butler. The rally was then capped two batters later on a two-run shot by catcher Brett Hayes for his 11th long ball on the season, tying him with now former Chaser Xavier Nady for most on the club. It also tied a career high for Hayes for homers in a season, matching the mark he set in 2008 with Triple-A Albuquerque and Double-A Carolina while with the Marlins.

Starter Brian Sanches took the early lead and proceeded to toss five innings allowing a run on four hits, his lowest runs allowed in a start this year. The lone run came on a solo homer by Express outfielder Jared Hoying in Sanches' final inning, the only homer he has allowed in 57.2 innings for Omaha this season while snapping a 67.1 homerless innings streak for the veteran right-hander. Relievers Buddy Baumann and Will Smith allowed five total baserunners and one run over the final four innings while totaling seven strikeouts to close out the win.

Manny Ramirez made his first ever appearance at Werner Park in the game, going 0-for-4 in his second game against the Storm Chasers this season. After Round Rock had trimmed the lead to 4-2 in the eighth, Ramirez stepped to the plate with a pair of baserunners on and nearly hit a go-ahead homer to centerfield that was tracked down by Paulo Orlando steps away from the wall. The 500-homer club member has only a hit and a walk in eight total at-bats against Omaha this year.

In the game Irving Falu recorded his 13th stolen base of the season, tying him with Mike Brewer for fifth place all-time in Omaha history at 82 stolen bases. The Storm Chasers will look to make it ten straight wins against Round Rock at Werner Park tomorrow with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
