Veterans Play Key Role in Omaha's Win

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Memphis, TN - Ben Broussard doubled in the go-ahead run in a four-run eighth inning rally that pushed Omaha past Memphis, 8-3, Wednesday night in the last of three meetings at AutoZone Park. The Storm Chasers took two out of three in the series to improve to 42-51 and move to within 4 1/2 games of Iowa in the American Conference North Division.

Willy Taveras opened the decisive frame with an infield hit, advanced to second base on a bunt single by Anthony Seratelli, stole third and scored after Broussard roped his two-base hit down the right field line to snap a 3-3 tie, drive in his first run in an Omaha uniform and chase reliever Nick Greenwood from the mound. Jorge Rondon took over for the Redbirds and saw Max Ramirez reach on a Jermaine Curtis fielding error that allowed Seratelli to score the second run of the inning. Brett Hayes followed with an RBI single to make it 6-3 before both runners advanced on a fly ball out and Quintin Berry was intentionally passed to load the bases. Paulo Orlando's sacrifice fly finished off the surge that carried the visitors to their first series win in Memphis since 2007.

Brock Peterson got the scoring started with a solo homer in the first, his league-best 21st of the season. Quintin Berry singled to open the Omaha third, stole second base and remained there when Irving Falu walked with one out. After Taveras struck out, the runners advanced on a Michael Wacha wild pitch and came into score on a base hit by Seratelli that put the visitors in front, 2-1. Memphis threatened in the bottom of the frame by loading the bases with one out on a hit and two walks but Danny Duffy wriggled out of the jam by getting former Storm Chaser Jamie Romak to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Two singles and an error filled the bases for the hosts with one out in the sixth but Duffy was able to again thwart the rally, when it appeared he would be taken out of the game after reaching his pitch count, by getting Curtis to pop up and Audry Perez to fly out to deep center field to finish off his performance. The southpaw yielded seven hits, walked three and struck out a pair over six innings but was involved in the decision.

Wacha was lifted after five frames during which he permitted four hits, walked two and fanned three. He was followed by Greenwood, who tossed a scoreless sixth inning but was touched for three straight singles, the last of which by Orlando knocked in Chase Lambin to extend the visitors lead to 3-1. Maikel Cleto, a former Redbird, took over in the bottom of the seventh and gave up two hits and issued a walk to load the bases but was not as fortunate as Duffy had been earlier in the night. Romak delivered a sacrifice fly and Tommy Pham followed with a single to drive in Ryan Jackson with the tying run. The hard-throwing right-hander then shut down the hosts over the final two innings to lock up his first win with Omaha.

Omaha will send left-hander Everett Teaford to the hill against Texas Rangers right-hander Alexi Ogando in Thursday night's series opener against Round Rock at Werner Park. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
