Beloved Wolf Pack Mascot Returns from Hibernation to Resume his Community Outreach

July 10, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hartford Wolf Pack News Release

HARTFORD - Global Spectrum announced today that, along with the return of the Wolf Pack name to the Hartford market's AHL team, Sonar, the lovable wolf mascot who delighted so many in the Hartford community during the first 13 years of the Wolf Pack's tenure, will also be resuming his role as the standard-bearer for the Pack's year-round community involvement.

A spirited and cuddly 7-foot, 275-pounder, Sonar burst on to the scene along with the Wolf Pack October 4, 1997, and immediately established a true bond with Connecticut hockey fans and non-hockey fans alike. Sonar got his name from the SONAR systems used in submarines, the Wolf Pack itself having been named for a term that refers to a group of submarines in attack formation, in honor of the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT and the State's long association with the U.S. Submarine Fleet.

Sonar will resurface by leading a "The Pack Is Back" Tour, which begins this Saturday, July 13, when the friendly lupine heads to Avon, CT for the ERRACE (Everyone Ride/Run Against Cancer Everyday) Bike Ride and 5k Walk/Run, starting at 10:00 AM. He also will cheer on participants in the GE 5k Kids' Run, benefitting the Petit Family Foundation, this Sunday, July 14 in Plainville, CT, beginning at 8:30 AM. On Wednesday, July 17, Sonar will be attending a 60th-birthday party for dedicated long-time Wolf Pack fan and XL Center fixture Larry Little, who has battled through two rounds of surgery and rehabilitation for a leg injury suffered in a fall. That will be at the West Hartford Health and Rehabilitation Center, 130 Loomis Dr. in West Hartford, CT, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Then, on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, Sonar will be reveling in the action of the Nutmeg State Games Ice Hockey competition, which takes place at the Newington Arena, 300 Alumni Rd. in Newington, CT.
