Sacramento River Cats News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Jemile Weeks collected three hits and scored two runs, but the River Cats could not overcome an early 8-0 deficit, ultimately losing to the Sky Sox by a score of 10-3 on Tuesday night at Security Service Field.

With scheduled starter Sonny Gray scratched Tuesday morning, right-handed relief pitcher Chris Resop made his first professional start since 2010. In his 2.1 innings of work, Resop yielded eight earned runs on nine hits and one walk with zero strikeouts, including a three-run home run from Sacramento native Tim Wheeler in the first.

Sacramento would get on the board in the sixth when Michael Choice singled home Weeks, who singled to lead off the frame. After Colorado Springs plated their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Scott Moore drove in two in the top of the eighth on a single to right-center field, scoring Weeks and Andy Parrino. Though Weeks collected his third hit in the top of the ninth, the River Cats were unable to surmount the Sky Sox lead, losing 10-3.

With Weeks' three-hit performance, he is now 7-for-10 in the series. Moore finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Choice went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Resop suffered the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year. Kyler Newby tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, Hideko Okajima gave up two runs in 2.0 innings, and Paul Smyth threw a shutout eighth inning that included a strikeout and two walks.

The win was awarded to former big leaguer Jeff Francis, who permitted only one run on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts, moving his record to 1-2 on the season. A rehabbing Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-3 with a run, while Dexter Fowler-also on a rehab assignment-finished 0-for-3 with two walks, a strikeout and a steal. Wheeler ended the day 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBI and his second home run of the year.

The series finale is set for 11:35 a.m. on Wednesday at Security Service Field when River Cats Opening Day starter Andrew Werner (7-11, 5.93 ERA) faces big league veteran Chris Volstad (5-1, 4.55 ERA) with the series on the line.

The Cats travel home to Raley Field on Thursday, July 11 at 7:05 p.m. for a four-game homestand during which three bobbleheads-Eric Hinske, Mark Ellis and Eric Byrnes-will be given away.
