D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. - D.C. United today announced that the club has acquired Luis Silva from Toronto FC in exchange for allocation money. The Mexican-American midfielder will join recent United acquisition Jared Jeffrey in being available for selection in the club's international friendly versus Chivas de Guadalajara on Friday at 8 p.m.
"Luis is an exciting and creative young player with tremendous technical ability," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "He has shown the capacity to manufacture and score goals. We're excited to add a player of his caliber to a dynamic young core of players."
Taken 4th overall by Toronto FC in the 2012 draft, Silva has already made 44 First Team appearances (33 starts), tallying five goals and adding seven assists. The 24-year-old featured collegiately for the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) for four years, and played the 2008 NCAA season with United midfielder/forward Chris Pontius. In his senior campaign, Silva scored 17 goals en route to being nominated as a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy and becoming the Gauchos' first NSCAA First Team All-American. The California native entered into UCSB's record books at the end of 2011, registering the joint-most matches played and notching the fourth-most goals at the time his collegiate career came to a close.
Joining Nick DeLeon and Casey Townsend, Silva is the third member of the Black-and-Red who was selected in the top seven of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. DeLeon was the 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year runner-up and Townsend featured collegiately for local school the University of Maryland.
