Isotopes Top Nashville in Series Opener
July 9, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Albuquerque (51-41) came out victorious 6-5 in a rain and lightning shortened game, five innings, over the Nashville Sounds (32-60) in the two teams first meeting at Isotopes Park in 2013. Right fielder Chili Buss (2-for-3, 3 RBI) had the game-winning base knock before the rain began.
The two sides exchanged runs in the fifth. Caleb Gindl tied the game at five in the top half singling up the middle. Buss followed two walks with a single scoring Elian Herrera and putting the Isotopes back in front.
Starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez (2-0, 6.60) went five innings allowing five runs on six hits and three homers while striking out four. Nashville's Jimmy Nelson (1-3, 3.62) suffered the loss allowing six runs on five hits.
The Sounds knocked three long balls in their four-run third but Albuquerque responded with five in their half of the frame.
Dee Gordon singled and stole a base in the inning. He has 32 swipes on the season, leading the Pacific Coast League. After a hit-batsman and a walk forced in two runs, Chili Buss evened the score with a two-run single. Buss has 18 multi-RBI games on the season leading the team. Brian Barden then put the Isotopes in front, 5-4, with an RBI groundout.
There is no rain check policy in effect for tonight's contest because the game was made official after five innings of play and a 58 minute rain and lightning delay.
The Isotopes and Sounds do it again tomorrow for the second game of their three-game set. Righty Matt Palmer (4-3, 4.10) will take the hill for Albuquerque against Nashville's southpaw Chris Narveson (2-4, 5.35). All the action can be heard on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
