Canaries Quelled by Lincoln

Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Canaries fell behind early and struggled to come up with clutch hits on Monday night in a 6-2 loss against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
Before a sellout crowd of 4,670 fans - the largest of the season - the Canaries bats squandered several scoring opportunities and left a season-high 16 men on base, leaving the bases loaded three times.
The first four Lincoln batters to face Canaries starter Adam Champion (3-5) reached safely in a four-run rally. David Espinosa knocked in a run with a base hit and Matt Forgatch followed with a three-run home run for the quick 4-0 lead.
Neither team would score again until the ninth inning, when Lincoln scored twice in top half. The Canaries loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, and two runs scored when Espinosa threw a would-be, game-ending double play ball into left field. But Lincoln closer R.J. Rodriguez came on to record the final two outs for his 19th save, tops in the American Association.
Despite giving up six walks, Lincoln starter and recent South Dakota State University graduate Stephen Bougher (2-1) shut out the Canaries over the first five innings and earned the victory. He allowed three hits and struck out one.
Following the shaky start in the first inning, Champion calmed down to scatter just three more hits and hold the Saltdogs scoreless through his six innings of work. He suffered his second straight loss, walking two and striking out four.
The finale of the series will be at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's a Give Back Tuesday. Fans who bring a canned food item to donate to Feeding South Dakota can purchase two tickets for the price of one. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
