Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - Jeff Ames and Ryan Garton nearly combined for a no-hitter, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (11-6, 49-36) still collected a one-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (2-14, 34-51) on Saturday. Ames recorded five shutout, no-hit innings to surpass Taylor Guerrieri for a new Hot Rods record with 24 consecutive scoreless innings pitched. Guerrieri's mark is an active total of 22 shutout frames.

After Ames retired the first nine batters he faced, Bowling Green picked up the only run of the contest in the bottom of the third. Patrick Leonard was hit by the first pitch of the inning by Taylor Cole. Following a walk to Brandon Martin, Leonard moved from second base to third on a passed ball. That set up a sacrifice fly from Tommy Coyle that scored Leonard for a 1-0 advantage.

Ames allowed a leadoff walk in the fourth inning but struck out the next three hitters to leave the runner at third base. A scoreless fifth inning closed the book on Ames, who extended his scoreless innings streak as well as a mark of 11 consecutive no-hit innings against the Lugnuts.

Ryan Garton finished the game with some help from the Hot Rods defense. Leonardo Reginatto caught a foul fly ball and held on despite falling into the Bowling Green dugout to finish the sixth inning. In the seventh, the Lugnuts loaded the bases but were stymied by a pop out that was caught by Brandon Martin in the outfield grass. Tommy Coyle robbed a hit from Chris Hawkins in the eighth by snuffing out a ground ball toward the right side. Garton retired all three batters in the ninth for the save.

Bowling Green is 7-0 against Lansing at home and will look to stay perfect in game two of the series at 5:05 PM CDT on Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark. LHP Matt Spann (1-1, 2.60) will make his first Hot Rods start in opposition of RHP Ben White (4-5, 3.67). Hank Fuerst and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will call the contest, starting with the Forever Communications Pregame Show at 4:35 PM CDT on the Hot Rods Radio Network (1340 "The Ticket" WBGN-AM and 1340wbgn.com).

The game will be followed, weather-pending, by the usual Sunday Smucker's Uncrustables Fun Run, when kids 14 and under can run the bases just like the Hot Rods. For more information and to secure your tickets, call the Hot Rods Ticket Office at (270) 901-2121 or visit BGHotRods.com.
