Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The TinCaps came from behind late to beat the Great Lakes Loons, 7-4, Saturday night at Parkview Field. Shortstop Tyler Stubblefield homered and had the go-ahead hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie.
One night after thumping the South Bend Silver Hawks 16-10, the TinCaps jumped out to an early lead Saturday thanks to a Great Lakes defensive miscue. Fort Wayne (5-11, 48-37) catcher Dane Phillips led off the home second against Loons starter Tom Windle with a groundball to shortstop that Corey Seager threw into the TinCaps' dugout allowing Phillips to get second base. Chris Burke singled to center field, moving Phillips to third. Still with no outs, Corey Adamson plated Phillips on a single through the hole on the right side of the infield. Two batters later, Luis Domoromo grounded out to second but it was good enough to bring Burke home and give Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead.
Great Lakes (12-5, 39-48) tied the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run scoring double by Brandon Dixon. In the ensuing half-inning, however, the TinCaps retook the lead, 3-2, on Stubblefield's home run to left field. It was Stubblefield's second homer with Fort Wayne since joining the club at the start of the second half. "Stubby" was signed by San Diego out of the independent Frontier League.
In back-and-forth fashion, the Loons equalized the scoring in the top of the fifth. Jose Capellan drove home Jeremy Rathjen with a single, tying the game, 3-3. Rodriguez rebounded after that to finish six strong innings - his longest of six starts with the TinCaps. The right-hander, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, matched his season-high with four strikeouts.
Matt Chabot (2-0) relieved Rodriguez to pitch the seventh and eighth innings for Fort Wayne. After recording one out, Chabot hit Rathjen, who then stole second base. With two outs, Capellan struck again with his second RBI-single of the game to give Great Lakes their first lead of the night, 4-3.
The Loons' lead didn't last long, as the TinCaps went back on top in the bottom of the seventh. Diego Goris reached to lead the frame on a second fielding error by Seager. The next batter, Phillips, proceeded to double Goris home to once again knot the game up, 4-4. Scott Griggs (2-5) recovered to retire two straight batters, but Stubblefield delivered with an opposite-field single to score Phillips and put the home side back in front.
The TinCaps tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Goris and Burke, who went 3-for-5 for his 15th multi-hit game of the year in 32 games played, both came up with RBI singles to extend Fort Wayne's lead to 7-4.
Roman Madrid closed the game out in the ninth for his 13th save of the season. The TinCaps have now won back-to-back games at home for the first time in the second half of the season.
Fort Wayne and Great Lakes play the middle game of their three-game series at Parkview Field Sunday afternoon at 3:05. Midwest League All-Star Joe Ross is set to start for the TinCaps against Miguel Sulbaran. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
