Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - For the first time in the 2013 season, Rochester Honkers shortstop Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) was held without a hit, as the Honkers were defeated 9-3 by the Waterloo Bucks on Friday July 5, at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, IA.

Burgess' 23-game hitting streak ranks second in team history - just behind Justin Parr's 24-game hitting streak in 2012 - and ties for fourth - with current MLB-player Juan Pierre (Manitowoc, 1996) - in Northwoods League history.

Connor McClain got things started for the Bucks in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out single. Chesny Young followed with a RBI double to center field to give the Bucks a 1-0 lead. Young would later score on a two-out infield single from Kyle Pollack. Waterloo increased its lead to 3-0 with an unearned run in the second inning.

Kevin Barker (UC Davis) put the Honkers in the hit column and run column with one swing of the bat in the top of the third inning as he belted his first homerun of the season over the left field fence. Barker led the Honkers offense by going 2-for-4 on the night.

David Kerian, Pollack, and Maros Calderon delivered consecutive singles and all came around to score to give the Bucks a 6-3 lead after three innings. Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) drove a one-out double in the top of the fourth inning. Reid Roper (Illinois) followed with a single to put runners on the corners with one out for the Honkers. Campbell scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Halloran (Minnesota,) while Roper scored on a RBI single from Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton.) Rochester cut the deficit to three runs at 6-3, but left the bases loaded in the inning.

Waterloo added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pad its lead. Gerrion Grim III earned the win (1-1) as he allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings in relief for the Bucks. Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) took the loss (2-2) as he allowed six runs, three earned, on ten hits in six innings for the Honkers. Waterloo native, Michael Letkewicz (Augustana College) struck out two in a scoreless inning in his debut for Rochester.

The two teams will continue a four-game series on Saturday July 6 at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is scheduled to start for Rochester (0-2, 18-19,) while J.T. Miller (Wabash College) is slated to take the mound for Waterloo (2-0, 26-10.) Saturday is "Life's a Beach" Night at Mayo Field and it will feature margarita specials.
