Crawdads Cruise After 8-Run FirstJuly 5, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL) - Kannapolis Intimidators Press Release
Crawdads starter C.J. Edwards fanned 10 batters over 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk to earn the win.
Intimidators pitchers countered with a season-high-tying 17 strikeouts of their own, including career-highs from relievers Adam Lopez and Cal Bowling.
Hickory scored eight runs in the first inning. Nick Williams jump- started the big inning with a home run off Euclides Leyer. The next three batters singled to load the bases for Joey Gallo, but Leyer was able to fan the Minor League home run leader. Nomar Mazara added an RBI single, and two batters later David Lyon came through with a 2- out, 2-run double for a 4-0 lead.
Luis Marte followed with his own 2-run double, and Nick Williams added a run-scoring single, ending Leyer's night after two-thirds of an inning and 10 batters faced. Bowling came on in relief in the bottom of the first and allowed an inherited runner to cross the plate for the eighth run.
The eight runs allowed in one inning matches the most allowed by the Intimidators this season. Kannapolis gave up eight runs to Delmarva in the fifth inning on April 17.
Leyer (2-11) suffered his league-leading 11th loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Bowling worked 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings, striking out six batters.
Lopez tossed 4.0 scoreless innings for the Intimidators, striking out nine batters, including striking out the side in the seventh.
Kannapolis broke the shut out in the sixth inning. Tim Anderson led off with a base hit and moved to second on an throwing error by Hickory shortstop Luis Marte. Jason Coats followed with a base hit, and Anderson scored on Keon Barnum's groundout. Two batters later Michael Johnson singled to cash Coats, cutting the Crawdads lead, 8-2.
Kannapolis last struck out 17 batters on May 24 in Hickory as starter Jake Cose fanned a career-high 13 batters that night against the Crawdads.
The Intimidators and Crawdads will play the third game of this four- game series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at L.P. Frans Stadium as RHP Mike Recchia (3-0, 2.45) takes on Hickory's LHP Luis Parra (4-1, 0.88). The Intimidators return to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Tuesday, July 9, to open a seven-game home stand against West Virginia and Greensboro..
