THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia dropped their second straight on Tuesday, falling 4-1 at Hagerstown. The Suns scored three in the bottom of the first inning against Tyler Glasnow. Shawn Pleffner hit a two-hit home run and Estarlin Martinez doubled in Brandon Miller to put the Power in an early hole. Hagerstown added a run in the six off Clario Perez. Max Moroff scored West Virginiafs lone run in the eighth, crossing on a wild pitch. Glasnow took the loss while Pedro Encarnacion earned the win, limiting the Power to one hit over seven innings while striking out six.
END OF THE ROAD RUN: Dilson Herrerafs road on-base streak was snapped with an 0-4 Tuesday night. The Power second baseman reached in 23 straight road games from April 28 though July 1, the longest such streak in the South Atlantic League this season. Herrera hit .358 on the road during the streak with 34 hits in 95 at bats and only seven walks. Herrera will join 2012 Power All-Star and current Altoona Curve outfielder Gregory Polanco in the 2013 MLB Futures Game at Citi Field on July 14.
GOODBYE HUB CITY: West Virginia closes out itsf three game set in Hagerstown this evening. The Power and first half division champion Suns have met 12 times this season and Hagerstown clinched the season set with back-to-back wins in this series. Wednesday marks the final meeting of the regular season between these division rivals.
HERE GOES HEREDIA: Luis Heredia, Pittsburghfs third best prospect according to Baseball America, will make his third SAL start when he takes this hill Wednesday. The right-hander has struck out nine batters over nine innings this season. Each of his next three starts are slated to be on the road.
STILL AT THE TOP: Orlando Castrofs 1.93 earned run average remains at the top of the League Leaders despite the fact that Castro has been a member of the Bradenton Marauders for two weeks. The southpaw pitched 74 and two-thirds innings for the Power in the first half, which will keep him among the leaders until the Power play their 94th game of the year.
BRADENTON BOUND: Pittsburgh promoted right-handed reliever Pat Ludwig to the Bradenton Marauders on Monday when they promoted John Kuchno back to the Power roster. Ludwig pitched for the Power for portions of two seasons, going 6-1 with an ERA of 3.17 spanning four 2012 appearances and 24 this season. The 10th round draft choice last summer will travel to Bradenton today and should make his High-A debut on Wednesday or Thursday.
NO SWOON: West Virginia finished June with 15 wins over 26 games, including eight since the second half started on June 20, to follow their club record-tying 20 wins during May. The teamfs batting average dropped slightly during the month, from .271 at the end of May to .268 entering July (a .261 average during June). The staff earned run average has also fallen, from 4.13 on May 31 to 3.90 as of June 30 (a 3.39 ERA during June).
POWER POINTS: Kawika Emsley-Pai has a five game hitting streak entering his next game, the longest current streak by a Power player... Barrett Barnes went 0-2 with two walks on Monday night and saw his 12-game hitting streak snapped. The outfielder batted .328 during his streak, which began on the final day of the first half and matched Walker Gourley for the longest by a Power player this season... Pittsburgh recalled Brandon Cumpton on Tuesday in time to start against Philadelphia. It is Cumptonfs second stint with the Pirates this season.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 4- The Power will host the Lexington Legends on July 4 at 6:05 pm. The game will be followed by a fireworks show and a concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 3-1 against Philadelphia. Garrett Jones hit his eighth home run of the year in the loss... Indianapolis held Louisville to two hits in a 4-1 win... Altoona lost the completion of Mondayfs suspended game against Binghamton 4-2. The regularly scheduled game was postponed... Bradenton lost 5-2 to Fort Myers... Jamestownfs game against Mahoning Valley was suspended due to rain.
