Stingers Miss Berth with Split at Duluth
July 3, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Willmar Stingers News Release
DULUTH, Minn. - Coming down the stretch, the Stingers needed to win both games of a double header on the road in order to position themselves as division leaders. Unfortunately, the Stingers ran into Duluth Huskies -- one of the hottest teams in the league -- and split the pair of games, finishing 2nd to Waterloo in the NWL North Division in the first half of the season.
The Stingers rolled through the Huskies in game one, winning 8-1. In a game that was suspended four days earlier, Abe Bobb (San Francisco) returned to the mound with a fresh arm, pitching the remaining six innings to notch his third complete game of the season. With the win, Bobb stayed perfect on the season (4-0), improving his sterling ERA to 1.36.
Bobb's stingy effort made the potent Huskies offense appear anemic as he scattered three hits, carrying a no hitter into the 7th inning. Bobb's three complete games lead the NWL and this effort earns him the CDI player of the game.
The Willmar offense provided all the runs Bobb would have needed over all of his outings, let alone this game. The Stingers were led by Marc Flores who finished 3-for-5 with a double in the first game. In the second game, the offensive dynamo reached base in four of his five plate appearances and added another double to tie for the league lead (13). At the conclusion of the second game, Flores' performances placed him in the top five across the league for RBI (30), doubles and slugging percentage (.600), making him the CDI player of the game in the night cap.
The second game began poorly for the Stingers as Duluth plated four runs in the first inning. However, the Stingers were game and fought their way back into the contest, eventually tying the game 5-5 in the 5th inning. The abbreviated game expired after seven innings with the Stingers on the short end, 7-5. Despite collecting 11 hits in the game, three more than they did in game one, the Stingers lacked the ability to collect timely hits like they had earlier in the day.
The 2013 season is presented by Charter. For more on your Willmar Stingers please visit the West Central Tribune at www.wctrib.com.
