Kansas City Drops Opener to Sioux Falls

Kansas City Monarchs News Release

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Sioux Falls Canaries did what they do best Tuesday night, hitting their 51st and 52nd home runs of the year en route to a 7-1 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

J.P. Ramirez's solo homer in the first inning and Tim Pahuta's three-run shot in the fourth were enough to give Sioux Falls the victory, but the Canaries added additional runs in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings. Sioux Falls is second in the American Association in home runs, one behind Wichita and two ahead of Kansas City.

Mitchell Clegg (2-2) started the game with an ERA over seven (7.36), but allowed only one earned run in six innings against a struggling Kansas City offense that had hit .167 in the five games previous to Tuesday night.

Eric Gonzalez (1-4), who lost his fourth consecutive game, surrendered six earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. Ethan Cole came on in relief in the seventh and gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings.

In a game in which Kansas City (16-28) had eight hits and stranded nine runners, Kennard Jones went three for four with two doubles and the T-Bones' lone run. New addition and former Kansas City Royal Joey Gathright made his debut for the T-Bones and went hitless in five at-bats.

Kansas City and Sioux Falls (15-29) continue their four-game series with game two on Wednesday night at 7:05. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618 or at tbonesbaseball.com.
