Stumpf Throws No-Hitter; Legends Sweep, Move into First

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky. ) Daniel Stumpf of the Lexington Legends pitched a no-hitter as the Legends took a 1-0 win over Greenville in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday night. All doubleheader games in the South Atlantic League are seven-inning games.
The Legends completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory in the second game. The two wins moved Lexington into first place in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League. The Legends, now 8-5 in the second half of the season, lead Augusta by one-half game.
Stumpf, a left-hander, struck out three batters and walked one. Aneury Tavarez walked with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, but was caught stealing. David Chester reached first on an error by first baseman Mark Threlkeld in the fourth inning. Chester moved to second on a passed ball and to third on an infield out, but was stranded there.
Stumpf retired the last nine batters. In the top of the seventh, Jose Vinicio fouled out to catcher Cam Gallagher, Drew Turocy grounded out to second baseman Kenny Diekroeger, and Chester grounded out to third baseman Michael Antonio.
The game's only run came on Raul Mondesi's first-inning home run.
Stumpf, who had never pitched a no-hitter on any level, evened his record at 6-6. Greenville starter Frank Montas (1-7) was the losing pitcher.
The no-hitter was the third in Legends history. Chris Devenski pitched a nine-inning no-hitter against Rome September 1, 2012, and three pitchers -- Derek Stanford, Chris George and Kirk Saarloos -- combined for a no-hitter against Hickory on July 30, 2001, the Legends' first season.
In the second game, the Drive took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single by Tavarez, a stolen base, an infield out and an RBI single by Keaton Briscoe.
The Legends claimed the lead in the third on singles by Threlkeld and Mark Donato and a two-out, two-run double by Bubba Starling.
Lexington broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning. Fred Ford led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Jin-Ho Shin was hit by a pitch, and after Yowill Espinal struck out, Terrance Gore singled, moving Shin to second. Mondesi's single loaded the bases. A walk to Threlkeld produced a run, and Gore scored on a wild pitch to give the Legends a 5-1 lead. With two outs, Starling singled on a grounder to deep short, scoring Mondesi, and Threlkeld came home when Vinicio's throw went past first base for an error.
Christian Binford (5-3) worked the first five innings and got the win. He lowered his earned run average to 2.08, third best in the South Atlantic League. Yunior Ortega (2-3) was the starting and losing pitcher for Greenville.
The three-game series concludes Wednesday. Game time is 7:05 p.m. A Ford Fireworks show will follow the game.
