Bulls and Clippers Split Doubleheader
July 1, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls earned a split of a doubleheader with the Columbus Clippers at the DBAP on Monday night, losing the opener 2-1 but bouncing back to take Game Two 5-0.
LHP Mike Montgomery (L, 4-2, 3.60) came out on the short end of a pitchers' duel in the first game, pitching a complete game and allowing one one earned run.
Danny Salazar (W, 2-2, 3.86) and two Columbus relievers were just a notch better, however. Salazar allowed singles in the first and second innings, but erased both on double plays. The Bulls didn't get another baserunner until one out in the seventh and final inning.
Tim Beckham broke a string of 15 straight batters retired with a single. He scored on Shelley Duncan's double for the Bulls' only run of the game.
The difference in the game was a controversial play at second in the second inning. After Chun-Hsiu Chen led off with a single, the Bulls appeared to turn an around-the-horn double play. First-base umpire Seth Buckminster ruled Chen safe at second, however, claiming that second-baseman Mike Fontenot didn't touch the bag for a force. Matt Carson promptly scored him with a single. Chen's RBI double in the sixth gave the Clippers an insurance run they would need.
In the second game, spot starter Cory Wade and three relievers shut out the Clippers on two hits. Shelley Duncan added two hits, including an RBI double, as the Bulls scored three in the third to put away the Clippers.
Adam Liberatore (W, 4-1, 4.23) earned the win in relief. Boof Bonser (L, 0-1, 9.64) took the loss. Center fielder Evan Frey (0-2) and LHP C.J. Riefenhauser (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER) each made their Bulls' debuts in the game.
The Bulls and Clippers conclude the series at 7:05pm on Tuesday at the DBAP. Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-4, 4.54) starts for Columbus against Durham's RHP Merrill Kelly (2-0, 2.50).
