Wright Goes Full Nine, SWB Loses, 1-0
July 1, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Pawtucket, R.I. - Steven Wright had his knuckleball working, and used it to help induce four double plays as he blanked the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) on Monday night in a 1-0 victory for the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston). The loss snapped Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's three-game winning streak.
Wright (4-5) tossed his third career complete game to win his fourth contest of the season. He issued four walks and allowed seven hits, but double plays in the second, fourth, fifth, and ninth innings helped him get out of trouble.
Pawtucket scored the only run of the ballgame in the fourth. The frame began harmlessly enough for SWB starter David Huff, as he struck out Mark Hamilton and got Justin Henry to ground out to second for two easy outs. However, Xander Bogaerts extended the inning by drawing the first walk off of Huff. Huff then attempted to pickoff Bogaerts at first, but his throw got away and allowed Bogaerts to move to third on the throwing error. Ronald Bermudez then slapped a single to left to plate Bogaerts.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's best chance to score came in the top of the first. Corey Patterson led off with an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch by Wright. He then tried to steal third, but was thrown out by catcher Dan Butler. J.R. Murphy followed with a walk, and a Fernando Martinez double moved him to third with just one out. Wright was able to get out of trouble with a foul pop-up and a groundout.
Huff (3-4) allowed just the one unearned run in five innings of work, and earned the hard luck loss. He walked just two batters, struck out four, and conceded four hits. Chase Whitley tossed two scoreless innings, and Josh Spence set down the side in order in the ninth.
Despite Monday night's loss, the RailRiders have taken two of the first three games from the PawSox. The two teams will clash in game four of a five-game set on Tuesday night; first pitch at McCoy Stadium is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Just the two games with Pawtucket remain on the road trip, as SWB will return to PNC Field on July 4 to open a nine-game homestand. Chris Bootcheck (6-2, 3.49) will start Tuesday for SWB, and pre-game coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
