Grissom, Mazzone to Appear at Coolray Field on July 7
July 1, 2013 - International League (IL1) - Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves will welcome former Atlanta Braves center fielder Marquis Grissom and longtime Braves' pitching coach Leo Mazzone to Coolray Field on Sunday, July 7. Both Grissom and Mazzone will be on hand for first pitches, public autographs and special meet-and-greet opportunities during the G-Braves' 5:05 PM game against the Durham Bulls.
Grissom, born and raised in Atlanta, played for the Braves for two seasons as part of his 17-year Major League career. In his first season with the Braves in 1995, he hit .258 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs in 139 games. Grissom's most memorable moments came in the playoffs, as he hit safely in all 14 games during the Braves' run to the World Series title. The center fielder recorded the final out of Atlanta's Series-clinching 1-0 victory in Game 6, catching a fly ball from Cleveland's Carlos Baerga. Grissom returned to the Braves in 1996 and hit .308 with 23 home runs and 74 RBIs in 158 games.
Mazzone was a staple of legendary Braves' Manager Bobby Cox's staff through the 2005 season. The veteran pitching coach helped develop and coach future Hall-of-Famers Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz. Like Grissom, Mazzone was a part of the 1995 club that brought Atlanta its first World Series title.
Both Grissom and Mazzone will take part in private Meet-and-Greets, as well as a two-hour public autograph session. Thirty preselected ticketholders will join Grissom for a Meet-and-Greet in the Super Suite from 4:00 to 4:40 PM, while Mazzone will meet with Home Plate Club patrons from 4:00 to 4:40 PM. Both will throw out first pitches prior to the 5:05 PM game, then will sign autographs for the public (limit one item per person) from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
Tickets for July 7 are on sale now by calling the Coolray Field Box Office at (678) 277-0340. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Coolray Field Box Office or online at gwinnettbraves.com.
