Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- The IronBirds (5-8) dropped the series finale and in turn the series, falling 6-2 to the Staten Island Yankees.

Mike O'Neill's bases loaded single plated two runs off of IronBirds starter Austin Urban for the game winning runs in the fifth inning.

Staten Island (6-6) got on the board first in the third. Austin Urban was unable to keep the Yankees off the board after giving up the leadoff walk to Daniel Lopez. Lopez advanced to second on a ground out by Bubba Jones and scored on Hector Crespo's RBI single up the middle.

The IronBirds answered with a run in the second inning. Trey Mancini drove in Sam Kimmel, cuing a single by Crespo who was drawn in at second base.

Hector Veloz launched a lead-off homer, his second bomb of the season, to give the IronBirds a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. He blasted Yankee reliever Andrew Benak's second pitch of the game into the visiting bullpen in left field.

Urban struggled in the fifth and couldn't hold the lead. After giving up a one out single and a walk, he was hurt by a dropped fly ball by Manny Hernandez for an error which loaded the bases. O'Neill's single plated two to put the Yankees up for good.

This essentially ended Urban's night. He took the loss pitching 4 1/3 innings giving up three earned runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked six.

David Richardson got the call in relief with the bases loaded in the fifth and delivered. He struck out clean-up hitter Yeicok Calderon after a long at-bat. He got Kale Sumner to pop out in foul territory to catcher Austin Wynns. At the time it kept the IronBirds within one run at 3-2.

The Yankees would tack on two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth. O'Neill went 2-for-4 and knocked in three RBI to lead the Yankee offense.

Benak picked up the win for the Yankees. He pitched four strong innings in relief striking out five and giving up five hits.

Kimmel went 2-4 with two singles, extending his hit streak to eight games. Over the eight games he is hitting for a .413 average.

Aberdeen will be on the road for the next three days as they travel to Hudson Valley to face the division leading Renegades.
