Alexandria Aces News Release

FORT WORTH- Shelby Ford's line drive double into the corner of right field off Alex Schmarzo drove in the winning run in a 4-run seventh inning as the Fort Worth Cats defeated the Alexandria Aces, 9-3, at LaGrave Field Sunday night.

With the game tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, relief pitcher Schmarzo (2-2) hit Aljay Davis with a breaking pitch in the back of his batting helmet immediately prior to Ford's big hit.

One out later, off reliever Clay Vanderlaan, David Bergin got his second big hit of a three hit day by driving in Ford with a single to left. Two walks later Ryan Miller chased Vanderlaan with a bases loaded hit off the leg of second baseman Alex Foltz to plate two more runs to give Fort Worth a 7-3 lead.

Bergin would finish with four runs driven in, including a 2-run single to left in the eighth off Cullen Babin that plated the final runs.

Stephen Nikonchik pitched three scoreless innings to record the pitching victory in relief of Andrew Wilkerson, who allowed three runs in six innings.

Alexandria starter Daniel Schmidt also allowed three runs in a 5 1/3 inning stint.

The two teams meet tomorrow for the second game of their four game series in Fort Worth. Ryan Zimmerman (2-2) pitches for Alexandria against Fort Worth's Erik Sheridan (4-1).
