Tides split doubleheader with Columbus

June 27, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Jake Arrieta allowed one hit over seven dominant innings and Norfolk got homers from Brandon Waring and Yamaico Navarro in a 5-0 win over Columbus in game two of a doubleheader Thursday night at Harbor Park. The Tides dropped game one, 10-3.

Arrieta (5-3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as he earned his second straight victory since returning from Baltimore on June 17. The 27-year-old right-hander walked four and struck out 10, the most strikeouts registered by a Tides pitcher this year. The only hit he surrendered was a ground ball single through the left side to Tim Fedroff to open the sixth frame.

Arrieta faced just four batters over the minimum, which was Norfolk's second seven-inning complete game of the season. He threw 64 of his 105 pitches for strikes as he lowered his ERA to 4.41.

The Tides gave Arrieta all the run support he would need in the third inning, as Brian Roberts singled home Navarro and Xavier Avery scored on a wild pitch by Clippers starter Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-4). One inning later, Waring belted a two-run homer and Navarro followed with a shot of his own to power the Tides to a 5-0 lead.

Roberts finished 1-for-4 in the nightcap, and he is now 3-for-10 with two walks in three rehab games with the Tides.

Navarro, who was making his first appearance with Norfolk since being outrighted from Baltimore Wednesday, finished with three of Norfolk's five hits in the win.

In the opener of the twinbill - a completion of a suspended game from Wednesday - Columbus cruised to a 10-3 win behind a season-high 19 hits.

The Clippers led 3-1 when rain halted Wednesday night's contest, and Columbus wasted no time in extending their lead when play resumed in the fourth inning Thursday. The Clippers plated three runs in the fourth and fifth innings against Mike Belfiore, who entered in relief of Wednesday's starter Jair Jurrjens (5-5).

Tim Fedroff, Nate Spears and former Tide Omir Santos each had three hits apiece for the Clippers, while Matt Lawson added two hits and three runs batted in. Bryan Price (1-1) earned the win with three shutout innings of relief.

The two clubs will wrap up their four-game series Friday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. Right-hander Daniel McCutchen (0-1, 6.52) will make the start for Norfolk against left-hander T.J. House (1-7, 5.37).

Notes: Buck Britton went hitless in the opener of the doubleheader, snapping his hitting streak at 21 games, a run that tied for the third-longest in franchise history...Henry Urrutia, promoted to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie earlier Thursday, went 0-for-3 in his Triple-A debut...Chris Snyder had two hits and two RBI in game one of the doubleheader...Jon Rauch worked a scoreless inning of relief in the opener to lower his ERA to 2.16 in nine outings.
