Winston-Salem Dash News Release

NINE-RUN FIFTH LEADS SOX TO VICTORY

The Salem Red Sox scored nine times in the fifth inning to pull away for a 12-3 triumph Wednesday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The Sox, who led 3-1 after four innings, sent 15 men to the plate and banged out eight hits en route to their highest single-inning run output of 2013. Winston-Salem starter Jake Cose surrendered seven runs in four-plus innings, while Jeremy Erben gave up the final five runs of Salem's day. In the losing effort, both Courtney Hawkins (14) and Joey DeMichele (4) went yard.

NINE-TO-FIVE JOB FOR THE RED SOX

Salem's nine-run fifth frame matched the most runs allowed by the Dash in a single inning thus far this season. Myrtle Beach posted a nine-run third inning in its 9-2 victory at BB&T Ballpark on May 15. The Dash have not allowed more than nine runs in one inning since Potomac scored 10 times in the eighth inning of its 13-3 win over Winston-Salem on July 25, 2010. In the Dash era (2009-present), Winston has never scored more than eight runs in one frame.

BLOUGH HIS OPPOSITION AWAY

Dash starter Bryan Blough, the reigning Pitcher of the Week in the Carolina League, shined in his first start of the second half Saturday night in Lynchburg. Blough tossed a career-high eight innings and held the Hillcats to just three hits in a 5-0 win, Winston-Salem's league-leading ninth shutout of 2013. Blough became the second Dash hurler to take home the league's weekly pitching award (Chris Beck, June 3-9).

HIGH FIVE

Blough has won his last five decisions dating back to May 13 at Potomac, which was eight starts ago. He has also earned the victory in each of his previous four outings. During this five-game winning streak, the Newnan, Ga., native boasts a 2.21 earned run average (13 ER in 53.0 IP), lowering his ERA from 6.94 to 4.13 during this span (2.81 drop). He has not lost since May 2 at Lynchburg (10 starts ago).

HAWKINS IN FINAL FUTURES GAME VOTE

Dash outfielder Courtney Hawkins is one of five minor leaguers involved in a final vote to determine the last member of the United States Team for the Sirius XM Futures Game, which is set for July 14 at Citi Field in New York. Fans can vote either online or via text message, with more information available on wsdash.com. The top prospect in the White Sox system according to multiple outlets, Hawkins is tied for second in the CL with 14 home runs despite missing a month of action due to a left rotator cuff strain. He also has 34 RBIs and a .184 batting average.

PHEGLEY, RIENZO ALREADY THERE

Even if Hawkins does not win the fan vote, the Dash will still be well-represented in New York. Winston-Salem alums Josh Phegley (2010) and Andre Rienzo (2011 and 2012) will compete on the United States Team and the World Team, respectively. Phegley is hitting .314 with 13 homers and 36 RBIs with Triple-A Charlotte, while Rienzo is 5-5 with a 5.33 earned run average with the Knights. In addition to this duo, 10 other Futures Game participants have played at BB&T Ballpark during their professional careers, including Xander Bogaerts, Billy Hamilton and Francisco Lindor.

FREDERICK, POTOMAC ON THE DOCKET

Following Thursday's finale, the Dash hit the road for a six-game road trip to tangle with the Keys and Nationals. The Dash swept Frederick in their first visit to Harry Grove Stadium from April 9-11, while Winston won only the finale of its four-game set in Woodbridge from May 10-13.

DASH DOTS

The Dash have now lost three games this season by nine runs, which is the highest margin of defeat for the club in 2013...Winston-Salem is just 2-for-25 (.080) with men in scoring position during this series...The Dash are in danger of losing their sixth home set of the campaign after only dropping only three series inside BB&T Ballpark during the entire 2012 season.
