Knighthawks' Baston and McLeod to Support Mental Health Awareness

June 27, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release

Jamie Batson and Cody McLeod will represent the Rochester Knighthawks Saturday in a charity lacrosse game to support mental health awareness. The Knighthawks players will be among several dozen lacrosse stars from the National Lacrosse League at the event in Arthur, Ontario.

The game will follow the First Annual Get In Touch For Hutch 1K walk and 5K race, which is in memory of local athlete Steven Hutchinson, who passed away in February. The proceeds from the race and the game will support Kids Help Phone, Wesforyouthonline.ca and Canadian Mental Health Association's Youth Engagement Projects.

"The ultimate goal is to have a lot of people come and have fun, and to raise awareness for mental health," said game organizer and NLL player Jamie Rooney, who hails from Arthur.

Batson was recruited by Rooney, who is one of his Kitchener-Waterloo teammates. The Knighthawks defenseman, who won the team's Most Improved Player Award, was happy to help with the fundraiser. The game at the Arthur Community Centre will start at noon with tickets just $3.00.

"Jamie Rooney asked me to play and I was happy to help," said Batson, who completed his second year with the Knighthawks in 2013 with his second straight Champion's Cup. "We should have a pretty good lineup. It should be a good game and we get to hang out with the fans after the game."

The game will also include Chad Culp, Dhane Smith, Jay Thorimbert and goalie Anthony Cosmo from the Buffalo Bandits. The Toronto Rock will also have representation with Rob Marshall, Kasey Beirnes, Josh Sanderson, Colin Doyle and retired defenseman Bruce Codd playing in the contest. Billy Howstrawser (Washington Stealth), Mat MacLeod (Colorado Mammoth) and goaltender Mike Poulin (Calgary Roughnecks) are also set to play in the charity game. The rosters will also include junior lacrosse standouts, past and present, including players from the local Arthur Aces.

Fans will have the opportunity to get autographs after the game, including signatures from 2013 NLL Champions Batson and Cody McLeod. McLeod completed his rookie NLL season with his first professional championship. On Saturday, he will play for something bigger than another championship.

"It's not just a chance to win a lacrosse game," said McLeod. "It's a chance to play in a charity game, which is always special. It's a great cause and I am glad to be a part of it."
