Blue Wahoos to Host Olympic Wrestler, NFL Pro Thursday

June 26, 2013 - Southern League (SL1) - Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

This Thursday, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, will host two big-league sports stars who call Pensacola home.

Ladarius Green, tight end for the NFL San Diego Chargers, played football at Booker T. Washington High School right here in Pensacola. Green was drafted in the fourth round by the Chargers in 2012, after a stellar senior season at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, when he caught 67 yards per game. The 6'-6", 240-lb tight end runs a 4.45 40-yard dash, and averaged fourteen yards per catch in his first NFL season.

Joining Green will be Sam Hazewinkel, who in 2012 represented the United States Olympic Team in Freestyle wrestling. Prior to being a four-time All American at the University of Oklahoma, Sam was an undefeated state champion three times while at Pensacola Christian Academy, including two junior national Greco-Roman titles. Hazewinkel also has the distinction of being the first Olympic wrestler who's father was also on the Olympic wrestling team (1968, 1972).

Donna Kirby, the Blue Wahoos Director of Promotion and Community Relations, said the team was excited to host more Pensacola sports stars throwing out the first pitches at Thursday's game.

"The Blue Wahoos are so excited to host Ladarius Green and Sam Hazewinkel to throw out the first pitches for Thursday's game. We love to host our sports stars, because not only do we get to introduce these great athletes to the Blue Wahoos fans, but more importantly we get to thank them for being such great ambassadors for our community," said Kirby. "Anybody who looks up these guys in a sports magazine or the internet is going to see they've come through Pensacola, and that says a lot about our community and the caliber of our youth sports programs here. We're so proud of them and happy to tell them thank you for representing Pensacola," continued Kirby.

Thursday's game is sponsored by Seville Quarter, and gates open at 6pm.
