Bullpen Lets Lookouts Down In Matinee
June 26, 2013 - Southern League (SL1) - Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
For the second time in less than 24 hours, a superlative pitching performance by a Chattanooga Lookouts starter went to waste.
One fat pitch from reliever Hunter Nelo undid six-plus innings of shutout work by starter (and tough loser) Andres Santiago, as Montgomery's three-run homer to lead the Biscuits tgo a come-from-behind 3-1 in a lunchtime special at AT&T Field Wednesday.
The teams, who had to get past a brief rise in tempers during Wednesday's game, meet in game four of the series Thursday night at 7:15.
Santiago (3-6) hasn't had a fair share of good fortune in 2013, but Wednesday's reveral had to be particularly painful. A Sean Burroughs RBI double in the fourth inning put the game's only run on the board (against Montgomery starter Enny Romero) was an unearned run, but it was the only one in game until the seventh.
A Cameron Seitzer single opened the inning, and with one out Keith Castillo drew a walk -- ending Santiago's day after only 82 pitches. But Nelo's second pitch to Torres was launched past the scoreboard for a 3-1 lead.
In the eighth, the Biscuits added another run against reliever Michael Thomas -- a run that caused the bottom of the ninth to be an insult added to injury.
Trailing by three, the Lookouts tried to snatch the win away. Erik Hamren, not the usual closer for the Biscuits, had trouble slamming the door. Bobby Coyle led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and Miguel Rojas moved him up 90 feet with a single.
Newly rejoined Matt Wallach was called out on strikes, but Rafael Ynoa followed with an RBI single that scored Coyle and pushed Rojas to third. Joc Pederson walked to load the bases. The inning-changing play followed, as Brian Cavazos-Galvez forced Pederson at second in a call that raised manager Jody Reed's ire despite a run scoring. Reed was ejected, but the Lookouts were still alive.
But J.T. Wise could only deliver a ground ball, leading to a game-ending force play. Pederson, Rojas and Ynoa all had two hits for the Lookouts, which outhit the Biscuits 10-7.
