Winston-Salem Dash News Release

OWENS, SOX BLANK DASH 7-0

The Dash mustered just three hits in Salem's 7-0 victory Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Red Sox starter Henry Owens blanked Winston-Salem over a season-high seven innings en route to the victory, while Salem soared ahead of the Dash with three in the first and four more in the third frame. Salem pitching faced just six more than the minimum, and the Dash did not get a runner to third base in the contest. The loss snapped Winston's three-game win streak and created a three-way tie atop the Southern Division five games into the second half.

BECK AGAINST THE WALL

Winston-Salem starter Chris Beck did not make it out of the first inning Tuesday night. Beck retired the first two Red Sox he faced before allowing five straight batters to reach thanks to three singles and two walks. He tossed 41 pitches in his two-thirds of an inning after using 83 to work through three frames in his previous start June 12 against Lynchburg. These two rough efforts follow Beck's nine-inning complete game shutout, the second during the Dash era (2009-present), versus Wilmington on June 7. Beck needed only 90 pitches in that gem.

YOU CAN GO GET HIM NOW

Beck became the first Dash starter who failed to escape the third inning this season. Jason Van Skike's one-inning start at Potomac on May 12 was Winston's shortest start prior to Tuesday. This showing was the shortest outing by a Dash starter since Jake Petricka did not record an out at Carolina on May 25, 2012. Petricka left the game due to an injury when a batted ball hit him.

OWENS OWNING

Thanks to Tuesday's stellar showing, Salem southpaw Henry Owens is now 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA over 18 innings against the Dash in three starts this season. He has struck out 22 in those three outings. When any other CL left-hander starts against the Dash, Winston owns a 12-5 record, including a 7-2 mark at BB&T Ballpark.

WHAT THE BLANK

For just the third time this season and the first time at BB&T Ballpark, the Dash failed to score a run on Tuesday night. Salem now owns two of those shutout victories, the first of which came on June 5 in Virginia (8-0). Winston-Salem is normally on the positive side of a blanking. The Dash lead the Carolina League with nine shutout victories. This number is one shy of St. Lucie, the Mets' Florida State League affiliate, for the highest among the 30 Advanced Class-A clubs.

RANGEL ROLLING

Before Tuesday's 0-for-4 effort, Winston-Salem first baseman Rangel Ravelo was hitting .474 (9-for-19) with five RBIs and two runs scored in his previous five games. In his 10 games against Salem, Ravelo is still 14-for-35 (.400) with eight RBIs and seven runs scored. Through 37 games with the Dash, Ravelo boasts a .318 average, which would be second in the CL if he qualified. During his High-A career, Ravelo has never owned a batting average lower than .303 entering the day of a game.

TRY TO ERROR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION

The Dash have committed seven errors in their last four games after stringing together a streak of 49 consecutive innings without a defensive miscue from the eighth inning of the Dash's June 12 game at home against the Hillcats through the second frame of their June 22 game in Lynchburg. This recent defensive slide has dropped the Dash to third on the circuit with a fielding percentage of .974.

DASH DOTS

The Dash entered the week with a 1-8 record on Mondays and an 8-2 mark on Tuesdays, but the squad won on Monday and on Tuesday this week...Terance Marin and Cody Winiarski combined to hold the Red Sox scoreless in the last five frames...Courtney Hawkins snapped his 0-for-23 slump with a double in the seventh inning...The Dash are hitting .077 (1-for-13) with men in scoring position thus far in this series.
