Blue Wahoos Sink M-Braves 7-3
June 26, 2013 - Southern League (SL1) - Mississippi Braves News Release
Pensacola, FL - The recently resurgent Pensacola Blue Wahoos proved to be too much against the Mississippi Braves for the second consecutive night, picking up a 7-3 win on Tuesday at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
The Braves (41-36; 3-4) led early but the bats fell cold in the late innings, and Pensacola (30-46; 5-2) took off for seven runs in the final four frames to pull away.
Mississippi started the scoring when catcher Christian Bethancourt hit a solo home run over the centerfield wall, his fourth of the season. That was also the first hit allowed by Blue Wahoos starter Tim Crabbe.
The Braves tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Barrett Kleinknecht and Mycal Jones hit back-to-back singles and moved to second and third on a Mike Lee sacrifice bunt. Dan Brewer then grounded one on the infield which was thrown home to try to get Kleinknecht, who plowed through catcher Tucker Barnhart and jarred the ball lose. Both runs scored, putting the Braves up 3-0.
But the Braves managed just one hit, a Bethancourt infield hit in the eighth, the rest of the way.
Meanwhile Pensacola was just getting started. In the bottom of the fifth, first baseman Marquez Smith singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Barnhart walked, and Ryan Lamarre grounded into a force out at second base to put men on the corners. Second baseman Brodie Greene ripped a Lee offering for a double, scoring both runs and making it 3-2 Braves.
An inning later, the Wahoos completed the comeback on a Travis Mattair two-run home run, his ninth of the season to make it 4-3 Pensacola.
Pensacola added two more in the seventh off Atlanta Braves reliever Cristhian Martinez, transferred Tuesday afternoon to Mississippi to continue his rehab from a right shoulder strain.
LaMarre added an RBI single in the eighth, plating Mattair to make it 7-3.
Lee (3-6) suffered the loss for the Braves, allowing four earned runs on six hits over six frames. Josh Ravin (1-2) earned the win, pitching two no-hit innings in relief. Trevor Bell picked up his second save for the Blue Wahoos.
Mississippi will try to climb back to .500 on Wednesday night in game three of the series beginning at 7:00 PM CT. Braves left-hander Ian Thomas (3-4, 2.70) will make the start against left hander Ryan Dennick (3-8, 3.23) for the Wahoos. Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM with the "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
