Szczur's Walk-Off Hit Gives Smokies 7-6 Win in Extras
June 26, 2013 - Southern League (SL1) - Tennessee Smokies News Release
KODAK, Tenn. -Matt Szczur's walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Tennessee Smokies a 7-6 win over the Jackson Generals Tuesday night at Smokies Park. The win, in front of 2,746, improves the Smokies record to 4-3 in the second half, 38-38 overall.
After both teams were held scoreless in extras, Ronald Torreyes hit a one-out single in the 14th to put a runner on base for Tennessee. Two batters later, Szczur ripped a double, off Andrew Kittridge (0-1), down the right field line to score Torreyes from first and give the Smokies the walk-off victory.
Earlier in the game, Smokies starter Austin Kirk pitched into a bit of trouble, giving up two runs in the first inning off of a RBI-groundout by James Jones and a solo home run to Ramon Morla.
However, the Smokies would tie the game up at two apiece in the second via a two-run home from Christian Villanueva. Justin Bour doubled to lead off the inning and Villanueva hit his seventh home run of the season over the left-centerfield wall onto the concourse.
Elliot Soto and Bour broke the game open in the third inning as Soto hit his second homerun of his career and his second home run in as many nights, breaking the 2-2 tie. After Szczur singled to center and Jonathan Mota walked, Bour hit a RBI-single to center field. On the same play, Mota and Bour came around to score on a fielding error by the right fielder Jones to give the Smokies a 6-2 lead.
Kirk went 4.2 innings, giving up six hits, four earned runs, one walk and struck out one. He threw 72 pitches, 40 of which were for strikes.
With the Smokies leading 6-5 in the ninth, Frank Batista gave up the tying run in the ninth inning on a RBI-ground out by pinch-hitter Julio Morban. Batista pitched a scoreless 10th inning, only allowing a walk. He struck out two in two innings of work.
Kevin Rhoderick pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for the Smokies, giving up a walk and striking out two. Hunter Cervenka (2-1) got the win after pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
Game three between the Smokies and Generals will be Wednesday night at 7:15 at Smokies Park. Tennessee RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-2, 2.38) will face off against LHP James Gillheeney (3-2, 2.97). Wednesday features another Buck Night at Smokies Park, where hot dogs, small popcorn and small sodas are only $1 each.
