Canaries Add Veteran Bat

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Canaries signed veteran infielder Marcos Rodriguez on Tuesday, and they released veteran infielder John Alonso.

Rodriguez, 30, played earlier this season with the Laredo Lemurs. The native Venezuelan hit .286 in 24 games with one home run and 10 RBI. Last year he played all but one game with Fargo-Moorhead, batting .296 with 25 doubles, one home run and 40 RBI. His best season came in 2011 with the Fort Worth Cats when he hit .341 with four home runs and a career-best 70 RBI.

Rodriguez began his career in 2002 as a prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He joined independent baseball in 2006, and he is a career .302 hitter in 671 career games.

Alonso hit .215 this year in 33 games with five home runs and 11 RBI while splitting time as the designated hitter and first baseman. He also had three doubles.

Rodriguez will be in uniform tonight when the Canaries open a three-game home series against Grand Prairie at 7:05 p.m. at the Birdcage. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
