Gotay Named Player of Week; Wyatt Heading to All-Star Game

Springfield, MO - The Texas League announced on Monday that Springfield Cardinals All-Star 3B Ruben Gotay has been named the Texas League Player of the Week for the week of June 17 - 23. It marks the third time that a Cardinal has won the award this season, with All-Star LF Mike O'Neill claiming it for April 22-28 and 1B Xavier Scruggs for April 29 - May 5.

Gotay, 30, compiled a .391 (9-for-23) batting average with two home runs and five RBIs, helping the Cardinals go 4-2 on the six-game homestand last week. He also added two doubles and scored five runs, finishing the week with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs in Sunday's 4-1 win against the Arkansas Travelers.

The Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico native is hitting .305 with eight home runs and 55 RBIs through 71 games this season. Gotay is 4th in the league in average, tied for 2nd in RBIs, 3rd in doubles (23), tied for 4th in hits (81), 5th in on-base percentage (.384) and 5th in total bases (128). He is currently riding a team-high 10-game hitting streak dating back to Game 2 of the June 13 doubleheader in Northwest Arkansas. During that stretch, Gotay is hitting .432 (16-for-37) with four homers, 11 RBIs and eight runs scored.

Gotay spent parts of four seasons from 2004-08 in the Major Leagues with the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves. Originally selected by the Royals in the 31st round of the 2000 draft out of Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent in March, 2013.

All-Star RHP Deryk Hooker transferred to AAA Memphis; RHP Heath Wyatt added to All-Star Team

The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Monday that Springfield Cardinals All-Star RHP Deryk Hooker has been transferred to the Memphis Redbirds (AAA). Replacing Hooker on the Texas League North Division All-Star Team will be Cardinals RHP Heath Wyatt (left).

Hooker, 24, has gone 1-2 with a 2.89 ERA and five saves through 29 relief outings with Springfield this season. He has struck out 45 batters and walked only six through 37.1 total frames. The San Diego, California native has spent parts of the last three seasons in Springfield, and will be making his Triple A debut with Memphis. Hooker was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the seventh round of the 2007 June Draft out of Mira Mesa High School in San Diego.

Wyatt, 24, has gone 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 relief outings since joining Springfield from High-A Palm Beach on May 27. The Searcy, Arkansas native has struck out 10 batters, not issued a single walk and only allowed four runs on 13 hits through 13.1 total innings of work. Wyatt has not allowed a single run since June 11 against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, compiling a scoreless streak of five outings and 6.1 innings. A Midwest League Midseason All-Star a year ago, Wyatt was selected by the Cardinals in the 33rd round of the 2011 June Draft out of Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Wyatt joins 3B Ruben Gotay, LF Mike O'Neill, OF Chris Swauger, LHP Tim Cooney and RHP Kevin Thomas as Cardinals on the North Division All-Star Team. Also selected as All-Stars but unavailable to play in the game are Hooker, RHP Keith Butler (currently with St. Louis) and OF Tommy Pham (currently with Memphis). The 2013 Texas League All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday night at 7:05pm at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Arkansas, the home of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.
