Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Carlos Martinez hurled 7 2/3 shutout innings behind another Brock Peterson home run as the Memphis Redbirds blanked the division-rival Iowa Cubs, 6-0, on Sunday night at AutoZone Park.
The shutout victory was Memphis' (38-40) league-leading 10th of the season and moved the club back into a tie with Iowa for first place in the PCL American Northern Division. The Redbirds are 5-1 against the I-Cubs this season.
Martinez retired 23 of 27 Cubs batters in the best pitching performance of his career. His 7 2/3 innings pitched was both a personal season high and the longest outing by a Redbirds starter this season. Martinez didn't walk a batter and struck out eight. None of the four baserunners he allowed made it past second base.
First baseman Brock Peterson went 3-for-3 and belted his league-leading 18th home run of the season in the win. Outfielder Oscar Taveras doubled and drove in three. Second baseman Kolten Wong added his sixth triple of the season.
Peterson singled and scored the Redbirds' first run in the bottom of the second inning. Peterson moved to second on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a throwing error, and came home as Tommy Pham grounded into a double play.
Memphis erupted in the next inning with more five runs for the eventual 6-0 final score. With the bases full of Redbirds thanks to Ryan Jackson single and pair of walks, Taveras hammered an opposite-field, three-run double into the left field corner. Peterson then tattooed a two-run home run over the Redbirds bullpen. It was his third big fly in the his last five games.
Sam Freeman worked around a hit while stranding his only inherited runner in 1/3 of an inning. He extended his scoreless stretch to a team-leading 17.2 consecutive innings over his last 10 outings.
In his third rehab appearance, Fernando Salas struck out one over a perfect ninth. He induced a groundout to shortstop, struck out Brad Nelson, and got Junior Lake to pop out to third in foul territory to end the game.
Nick Struck (2-1) yielded seven hits for six runs (five earned) with four strikeouts in five innings for the loss.
Memphis and Iowa continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Monday night. Left-hander Nick Additon (5-2, 4.46) will toe the rubber for the Redbirds against Cubs left-hander Brooks Raley (5-5, 5.40).
