Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - The Duluth Huskies scored eight runs in the top of the 12th inning of a 10-2 win over the Rochester Honkers on Sunday, June 23 at Mayo Field. The loss for the Honkers ended an eight-game win streak.

The Huskies grabbed an early lead thanks to a two-out RBI double from Nick Saathoff in the top of the second inning. The run, unearned, was the only one allowed by Honkers starting pitcher Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State.) He allowed three hits in four innings while striking out four batters.

Reid Roper (Illinois) started the bottom of the fourth inning with a double to the left-center field gap. He scored on a single from Kevin Barker (UC Davis) to tie the game. Barker would later score on a two-out single from Kalei Hanawhaine (Hawaii) to put Rochester ahead 2-1 after four innings.

Saathoff drew a walk to start the Duluth half of the fifth inning and scored on a wild pitch by Honkers relief pitcher Hayden Edwards (Kansas) to tie the score at 2-2. Edwards allowed one run in his inning of relief, while Alex Tenorio (Menlo College,) Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College,) and Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief to keep the score tied through eight and a half innings of play. Huskies starting pitcher Luke Vandermaten allowed two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings.

The Huskies had the go-ahead runner on second base in the top of the ninth inning, but Tyler Baker (Wichita State) took away a hit and a RBI away from Kyle Teaf with a diving stop and throw to first base to end the threat. Hanawahine drew a one-out walk in the bottom half of the ninth inning, but was left at first base; so the game headed to extra innings.

Campbell added a second scoreless inning, before being relieved by Stephen Paladino (Felician College.) Paladino pitched a scoreless top of the eleventh in his first inning of work. Matt Halloran (Minnesota) started the bottom half of the eleventh inning with a single to left field and Barker was hit by a pitch to give the Honkers a pair of base-runners with no outs. Nate Carter was able to retire the next three batters and leave both runners in scoring position and force a 12th inning.

Paladino walked Conor Szczerba to start the top of the 12th inning, Teaf followed with a bunt single and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Christopher Harvey drew a four-pitch walk to give Duluth a 3-2 lead. Michael Suiter delivered a two-run double to give the Huskies a three-run lead. Brad Wilson added a two-run double later in the inning to cap off the eight run inning.

Paladino took the loss (0-2) for the Honkers. He allowed eight runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Carter picked up the win (3-1) for the Huskies. He allowed two hits in 3.2 scoreless innings. Alex Greer (Iowa Western) led the Honkers offense with three hits on the day. Hanawahine added a pair of hits, a RBI, and a run scored on the day.

Rochester (15-10) will enjoy its first scheduled off day of the season on Monday before beginning an eight-game road trip on Tuesday, June 23. The road trip features eight games in seven days in St. Cloud, Alexandria, and Willmar. Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) is scheduled to start for the Honkers. Rochester will return home to Mayo Field on Tuesday, July 2, when the St. Cloud Rox come to town for a two-game series. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m.
