Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - James Paxton recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts as the Tacoma Rainiers suffered a 2-1 series-opening loss to the Fresno Grizzlies at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night.

Paxton limited the Grizzlies to three hits and issued one walk over 6.0 shutout innings in his 15th start for the Rainiers this season. The left-hander's strikeout total was his highest since fanning 11 batters on July 14, 2011 with Double-A Jackson.

Brad Miller ended Fresno starter Mitch Lively's no-hit bid in the bottom of the seventh inning with a lead-off single. He eventually gave the Rainiers a 1-0 edge after scoring from third on a fielding error committed by Grizzlies left fielder Kensuke Tanaka on a fly ball hit by Carlos Peguero.

The Rainiers lead did not make it through the top of the eighth inning when the Grizzlies countered with a pair of runs. Gary Brown hit a game-tying RBI double and Tanaka delivered a go-ahead RBI single in consecutive at-bats with one out.

Miller was responsible for each of Tacoma's two hits after going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. The infielder has now hit safely in a team-high 18 consecutive games dating back to May 29. He has batted .377 (29x77) with seven extra-base hits and 23 RBI over that 18-game stretch.

Reliever Logan Bawcom (0-2) was dealt the loss after allowing both runs to score in the eighth inning. He gave up three hits with one walk and one strikeout over 2.0 innings.

The Rainiers (44-33) host the second of a four-game series against the Fresno Grizzlies (36-41) at 1:35 p.m. tomorrow, June 23. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (2-2, 1.69) is scheduled to start for Tacoma against Grizzlies right-hander Chris Heston (6-5, 5.42).
