Wilmington, Charlotte Tie at LegionJune 22, 2013 - USL PRO (USL PRO) Wilmington Hammerheads FC
The constant change of possession after the start of the first half created several attempts on both ends of the field. A breakaway by Wilmington forward Kyle Greig from the midfield constructed a turn play to Daniel Roberts on the outside for a quick cross to the center of the box allowing a goal attempt by Paul Nicholson, ending in a collision with Charlotte goalkeeper Eric Reed.
Jorge Herrera took an attempt for Charlotte closing in on halftime in the 38th minute with a hard shot soaring above the crossbar after clipping the gloves of Hammerheads goalkeeper Troy Hernandez, receiving a corner kick. Hernandez followed the play with a punch to the ball, clearing it from Hammerheads territory and back up the field.
Wilmington had two near attempts to put a shot on the board in the second half. Midfielder Bryce Taylor cut to the middle from the outside right for a drive deflecting off Reed. Forward Cody Arnoux followed shortly thereafter with a breakaway run into the box, but was taken down without regard from officials.
Within the final seconds of stoppage time, Herrera was close to gaining a result for Charlotte victory and was denied the opportunity as the ball rolled outside the goal post.
The Wilmington Hammerheads will travel to Red Bull Arena on Sunday, June 30 for a return match versus the New York Red Bulls Reserves. The match will live streamed at www.uslnation.com via UNATION.
