Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

EL PASO, Texas. - Ben Moore became the all-time strikeout leader in franchise history on Friday night while helping the Sioux Falls Canaries to a 7-3 victory over the El Paso Diablos, ending a seven-game losing streak.

Moore (4-2) fanned Bryan Joynt in the third inning for his 520th strikeout in a Sioux Falls uniform to surpass Rich Hyde, who had held the record since 2001. It was one of Moore's six strikeouts in his fourth victory and a quality start. He held El Paso (8-25) to two runs on six hits through seven innings while walking two. Now in his fifth season with the Canaries, Moore already holds the league strikeout and wins record.

The Canaries (13-22) won for the first time on their 10-game road trip through Texas to end their longest losing streak of the season.

The two teams were locked in a pitcher's duel until the eighth when a five-run outburst by the Birds broke a 2-2 tie. John Alonso worked a leadoff walk and moved to third on Tim Pahuta's double. Jared Clark then lined a ball that was dropped by the left fielder and allowed Alonso to score. Cory Morales followed with an RBI groundout, and Nate Baumann tripled him home. Nick Van Stratten and Jake Taylor added RBI hits.

Van Stratten was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Baumann and Taylor each had two-hit performances with an extra-base hit.

El Paso starter Michael Joyce tossed five scoreless innings before the Canaries scored all seven runs against the Diablos bullpen. Moises Montero (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, allowing all five runs in the eighth inning.

Three Canaries relievers -- Matt Daly, Kirk Clark and Alan DeRatt -- combined to hold El Paso to one run and one hit in the final two innings.

The four-game series against the El Paso Diablos continues at 8:05 p.m. CDT on Saturday, June 22, in El Paso. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
