Trenton scores nine in the sixth; beats Portland 9-2

(Trenton, N.J.) - The Trenton Thunder (37-35) had nine straight hits during a nine-run sixth, and beat the Portland Sea Dogs (37-35) 9-2 on Friday night in the series opener at Arm & Hammer Park. Portland and Trenton are now tied for the second playoff spot in the Eastern League's Eastern Division.

Trenton had nine consecutive hits in the sixth inning, scoring nine runs off Drake Britton (6-6) and Chris Balcom-Miller. Britton left the game with six runs on his line, but Balcom-Miller allowed a three-run homer to Jose Pirela. During the 13-batter inning, the Thunder had a hit of every kind, receiving a hit from all nine in their lineup.

Britton was hitless for the first 5 innings, but allowed eight runs on seven hits over 5.1 IP. The lefty walked two, fanned four and suffered his first loss since May 30th.

Portland put up the first run of the series, receiving a one-out RBI single by Michael Almanzar, his team-leading 49th of the season.

Scottie Allen (1-0) dazzled over six strong innings in his Double-A debut, earning the win. Allen retired 12 batters in a row at one point, and gave up only three hits on one run. Rigaberto Arrebato tossed the final three innings to earn a save in his first Double-A game.

Pirela led off the sixth with a double and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Slade Heathcott put Trenton up for good with a run-scoring triple. Tyler Austin, Carmen Angelini and Andrew Clark added RBI hits. Pirela capped the nine-run inning with a three-run homer off Chris Balcom-Miller.

Garin Cecchini picked up his first Double-A hit in the eighth on a run-scoring double. Cecchini went 1-for-4 in his first game with Portland.

The Sea Dogs are 2-3 on the roadtrip; Trenton won their fifth straight.

The Sea Dogs continue their three-game series with the Trenton Thunder on Saturday night beginning at 7:05 PM from Arm & Hammer Park. Knuckleballer RHP Charlie Haeger (3-3, 3.96) takes on Right-hander Mikey O'Brien (4-2, 3.68)
