Thunder Bay Border Cats News Release

It was an thrilling finish at Subway Field on Thursday night as the Border Cats scored in the bottom of the 9th inning to edge the Duluth Huskies 1-0. The Cats scored the only run of the game with two outs in the last of the 9th as Cory Kay (Harper College) singled off Huskies reliever Chris Cervantes (0-1). Alex Bautista (Clarendon College) then drilled a double to the gap in left-centre field allowing Kay to race around and scored the winning run as the Cats improved their record to 9-14. Kay and Bautista both collected two hits on the night.

The Cats also played great defence in the victory. With the go-ahead run at third base in the top of the 8th inning, second baseman Philip Lyons (Nicholls State University) made a spectacular diving play to his right to snare a line drive for the third out. Catcher Dylan Goodwin (Central Michigan University) also cut down a run at the plate as he chased down a potential wild pitch and fired a strike to pitcher John Hayes, who applied the tag for the out at home.

Hayes, from Murray State College, was sensational as he fired a two-hitter over eight shutout innings. The righthander walked three and struck out four. Zach Thiac (Nicholls State University) picked up his first win as he pitched a scoreless top of the 9th inning with one strikeout. Duluth starter Clay Chapman also had a solid outing as he allowed only four hits over eight innings with 11 strikeouts.

The Cats now lead the 10-game season series against the Huskies for the Superior Cup 2 games to one heading into the final game of the homestand tonight. First pitch is set for 7:05pm. Ryan Atwood (Florida Gulf Coast University) will get the start on the mound for Thunder Bay. The lefthander has made three starts and is 0-1 with a 3.08 ERA.
