Burlington Bees News Release
Janelfry Zorrilla went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBIs to give the Clinton Lumberkings an 11-6 win over the Burlington Bees on Thursday night at Community Field.
Burlington fell into a big hole on Thursday, falling behind 6-0, but the Bees (0-1) crawled back to tie the game after eight innings. Unfortunately, the Lumberkings (0-1) scored five runs in the ninth against Robbie Powell (2-1) to hand the Bees the loss.
Powell entered in the ninth and got Jabari Henry to fly out. Ketel Marte tripled and Dario Pizzano was intentonally walked to set up a double play. Taylor Ard was hit in the foot by a pitch to load the bases. Zorrilla, who already had a grand slam in the game, singled home Marte to pull Clinton ahead by a run. Jordy Lara and Gaby Guerrero each followed with two-run singles to give Clinton an 11-6 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth. Grady Wood (4-2) worked around an error to pitch a scoreless ninth for the win.
Pat Lowery struggled in his start, allowing six runs, five earned in four-plus innings. Jabari Henry walked to start the game and scored on a double by Pizzano. In the third, Pizzano singled home Lopes with the bases loaded and Zorrilla hit a grand slam with one out in the inning to give Clinton a 6-0 lead.
Burlington scored three runs in the fourth thanks to a RBI fielder's choice by Chevy Clarke and two-run triple by Chance Ross.
Anthony Vasquez allowed a one-out double to Andrew Ray in the sixth and was pulled after striking out Clarke. Blake Holovach entered and surrendered a two-run home run to Michael Bolaski to allow the Bees to come within one of the lead.
In the eighth, Wade Hinkle led off the frame with a single, and after Blake Holovach was pulled for Grady Wood, Ray doubled home Hinkle to tie the game.
The Bees and Lumberkings will play the second game of the four-game series on Friday night. Tyler DeLoach will face Matt Anderson at 6:30 p.m.
