Darnell Tosses Gem Against 'Wolves

June 20, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release

The debut of new SeaWolves pitcher Drew VerHagen was spoiled by a career day from New Britain starter Logan Darnell as the latter tossed a complete game shutout to defeat Erie 2-0.

VerHagen's debut started strong, striking out the first Rock Cat batter he faced and striking out two of three batters in that inning. VerHagen struck out a career high eight batters and worked six innings.

VerHagen's only mistake came in the second inning. The pitcher left a fastball over the plate and New Britain's Reynaldo Rodriguez hit his second homerun of the series to give the Rock Cats an early 1-0 lead.

VerHagen ran into more trouble in the seventh. After hitting the first two batters on two strike counts, a bunt attempt by A.J. Peterson led to a play at third that went in favor of the Rock Cats. With the bases loaded, VerHagen was relieved by Tyler Stohr, who retired three consecutive but allowed a run. New Britain led 2-0.

That was more than enough for Darnell. The starter tied a season high with nine strikeouts over his nine innings of shutout ball. The only real SeaWolves threat came in the fifth inning.

Erie led off with two singles to put runners on with no one out. A pop out by Jamie Johnson and double play by Eugenio Suarez ended the inning. Darnell would finish by retiring 12 of 13.

The SeaWolves will play Binghamton and Trenton in three game sets on the road before returning home next Thursday to play Richmond in a four game set.
